Midterms...

I have a midterm tomorrow and two midterms Thursday. I am kind of nervous about the one tomorrow. It is on Language Aquisition. The teacher for this class is supposedly really strict and gives really hard tests. Supposedly most of her class gets a C. I have been studying for a while, but since I am not used to studying that much it is kind of hard for me to come up with effective ways to study. Esspecially for this subject. It is a lot of memorization, but the things learned must be put into real life situations. I think this is what may make it hard because it involves more thinking than usual.

For the next two midterms on Thursday I am not that nervous. This is because there is not as much information for me to know in each of these classes. For religion I am taking Death and Resurrection, and most of the stuff we need to know is common sense. Also we won't need to apply it to normal everyday experiences. My other midterm on Thursday is Music. I think this will be kind of hard, but still not as hard as Language Aquisition.

After this week is over I will be so happy. I won't have anymore stress because midterms are over. Also I'll be able to go home and relax in my own room.

Confused =/

Right now I am kind of confused about my major. I am currently a speech pathology major. Speech pathologists help people with speech impediments. In my case I would want to do it with children, but some people are speech pathologists in hospitals or places like that to help older people that may have had a stroke or something. This seems like something I would enjoy, but I'm not sure. This is because ever since I was little I always wanted to teach. By being a speech pathologist I will kind of be teaching, but I will not have my own classroom or anything like that. Most of the work will actually be one on one. So I really do want to teach. It is something that I can see myself doing since I have done so much with kids since I was around 13-14 years old. It is also something I know I will enjoy.

The only problem is being a third grade teacher does not make that much money. When I get older I would like to be able to support myself and my family on my own just in case anything happens. And I know by being a Speech Pathologist I will definatly have enough money to do that. They say "money doesn't buy happiness" but in a way it does. If I enjoy being a speech pathologist and I make more money I know I will definately be happier than if I was a teacher living pay check to pay check. I know I won't be misserable being a speech pathologist I just don't know if I'll regret not being a teacher. I wish I could minor in education, but you can't here at St. John's. So I don't know I'm just confused. I'll probally take a course in education next semester to help me make up my mind. Also I am probally going to observe a speech pathologist soon so I have a better idea of what I will be doing if I become a speech pathologist in the future.

Tanning- 2nd Draft

Many different studies have shown the negative sides of tanning. However, there are still many people that go. I am from Staten Island and if there is one thing that Staten Island is known for (besides the dump) it would be tanning. Even on MTV when they had the show “True Life: I’m a Staten Island Girl” one of the first things they showed was a tanning salon.
One advantage of indoor tanning is that you are able to maintain the tan all year round; even if it is cold outside. Another benefit of tanning is that you can choose when and how long you would like to tan for. A person is even able to go tanning at night when they get home from a long day of work and the sun is not even out. Tanning is also beneficial because it helps the body produce Vitamin D. When a person is exposed to sunlight their body produces vitamins. However, regular sunlight would also be able to produce the same vitamins for the body. Vitamin D helps prevent people from many different diseases. For instance, it prevents the body from getting prostate, colon, and breast cancer. Also it even strengthens bones.
Besides the positive sides of tanning there are also many negative effects that many people have heard of and are aware of. For example, tanning can cause wrinkles and increase skin aging. It can even cause skin growths and diseases; such as, moles and skin cancer because of the Ultraviolet rays. Tanning can also distort and damage DNA strands. This is because a tanning bed emits from fifty to one hundred percent more Ultraviolet rays than the regular sun. Another negative effect of tanning is that it can damage a person’s eyes. The Ultraviolet rays from a tanning bed can increase a person’s possibility of developing some cataracts, pterygium, and macula degeneration. Pterygium is a tissue growth on the white part of the eye, and macula degeneration is damage to the retina.
Even though all of these positive and negative affects of tanning are valid one thing that must be understood is that they are bias. For example, the websites that I got the advantages of tanning from were all from tanning salons. Also the websites I got the disadvantages of tanning from were all health related from doctors. The last opinions, that of course are also bias, are my own and the people being interviewed. This is because over many years we all become influenced by our family, friends, and surroundings. Therefore, our opinions are formed by what we see around us or by what is told to us.
I have been tanning plenty of times. Even though I am aware of the harmful things tanning can do to my body I still went. I went for one period of time to become tan for prom. Another time I went was before I went to Cancun because I did not want to burn in the sun there. It was something I did to make me feel better about myself because where I am from the tanner a person is the better they look.
I interviewed one of my friends that goes tanning on a daily basis. He told me his view of it and how he feels about it. The first thing he told me was that he went tanning to feel better about himself. He believes that the tanner a person is the better they look. He also told me how everyone around him goes tanning. It is very common for people of all ages and of both sexes to go tanning. He said, “Even people you would least expect to go tanning do. For example, teachers and even senior citizens go tanning.” Another thing that he told me was that the environment he grew up in had an affect on the way he thinks. In Staten Island he saw everyone that was tan and began to think of a tan person as the ideal person.
The last thing I asked in the interview was “Is the physical appearance that tanning gives you worth your life?” I think he replied by making a very good point. He said, “Well in a person’s mind they are more worried about the today rather then the tomorrow. At that moment in time is what matters most and whatever effects or consequences caused by it aren’t thought about or consumed within their mind.” This response showed me that people today worry more about what is going on in the moment. They do not think ahead as to how their actions may affect their future.
Another person I interviewed is someone that does not go tanning. They said that even though tanning is popular around them it is not something they do. She simply stated, “I never went tanning because it is bad for you.” Also, later in the interview she mentioned how she thinks that going tanning in tanning salons can make a person look very fake and orange which is also why she never had a desire to go tanning. This shows that even though she does not go tanning because she is aware of the risks; another motivation that prevents her from going tanning is her appearance. She does not want to look fake or orange.
Today’s society is very worried about their appearance. It is almost as if they will do whatever it takes to look better. I have been tanning plenty of times. However, I stopped because I became more aware of what it can do to my body and how it can harm me. Everyone has their own opinion on tanning and why they would or would not want to go. I just don’t think that being tan is worth all the risks a person is taking.

advantages of single sex education for boys

Does single-sex education work for boys?

You'll occasionally hear people claim that single-sex education is "good for girls, but not for boys." In fact, recent research has demonstrated that single-gender classrooms benefit boys as well -- particularly for subjects such as reading, writing, art, and music. Researchers at Cambridge University (in the UK) examined the effects of single-sex classrooms in schools in four different neighborhoods, including rural, suburban and inner-city schools. They found that "using single-sex groups was a significant factor in establishing a school culture that would raise educational achievement." For example, at Morley High School in Leeds, only one-third of boys had been earning passing grades in German and French prior to institution of the program. After the change to single-sex classes, 100% of boys earned passing grades. Click on the link to read the story which appeared in the Sunday Telegraph March 30, 2003.

Advantages of Single Sex Schools

Three Reasons for Choosing a Single Sex School
Your child's happiness is one of the most important factors in selecting a school. Here are three reasons why a single sex school might prove to be the best choice for your son or daughter.
1. Competition
Boys tend to soften their competitive edge and become more collaborative in a single sex setting. They can just be 'boys' and not worry about what the 'girls' might think.
Girls drop their shyness and begin to take risks in a single sex setting. They become more competitive. They embrace sports like field hockey and soccer with gusto without worrying about appearing like tom boys.
2. Academics
Girls relax enough to feel comfortable exploring non-traditional subjects such as mathematics, advanced sciences, computers and technology, wood-working and so on. Boys participate in choirs and orchestras and learn Latin in single sex settings. These are just a few examples of how children will break out of their stereotypical roles and behavior when they are left to their own devices. Single sex education has a delightful way of encouraging children to be fearless, to be curious, to be enthusiastic - in short, to just be themselves.
3. Socialization
Boys have always felt a need to impress girls in the classroom. Girls usually feel as though the boys are always teasing them. Surely there is enough time in college and in later life to deal with social and other kinds of intercourse? I feel very strongly that children are subjected to an avalanche of pressures from every quarter to become adults before they are ready to do so. They grow up too quickly. Let them be children for a few more years. Single sex education with its gentler, more controlled social outlets is just the ticket for many children. Maybe it's right for your child.
Blended or Co-Institutional Schools
Many Roman Catholic schools offer their own unique approaches to single sex schooling by offering co-instituional or blended schooling. Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, has two distinct high schools operating under the same roof: one for boys, the other for girls. This is the co-institutional approach.St. Agnes and St. Dominic School in Memphis, Tennessee, blends its single sex education with co-educational depending on the grade level involved.
Compare the separate campus, the co-institutional and the blended schools. Any one approach might be right for your son or daughter.

The short essays on writing, reading, and research

From reading the short essays on writing, reading, and research in the Vision Quest Guidebook I learned that writing, reading, and research all go hand in hand. Basically each one of them involves at least one of the other ones. Another thing I learned is how reading and writing are "social" things. They involve a reader, a writer, a text, and a situation. When you read something you get a better understanding of the person who wrote it. Also when you write something you are giving someone else a better idea of the type of person you are.

Research incolces reading and writing. It involves fulfilling a curiousity you may have about anything. I learned research can even be asking yout mother something about you when you are little. It can even be interviewing someone. I never really thought of something like that as research until now. I used to only consider research as something you look up from a book or online; not as finding information you are curious about by using any type of source.

Question on Page 81

What Makes a good teacher? And who has been your favorite teacher and why?

I think that there are many different qualities in a "good" teacher. First of all, the teacher must actually want to be there. This is because it is obvious when a teacher just views going to class as a job instead of as something he or she enjoys. The next thing is the teacher must be able to explain things in more than one way because all students learn differently. Some learn by reading, others learn by writing, and others learn by listening. Also every good teacher must be a good listener. Another thing they must do is know that sometimes it is okay to not be serious and to just make jokes. This makes the class a little more fun and makes students actually enjoy being there. However, a good teacher knows the appropriate times for this and knows that they need to be serious too. Lastly, a good teacher does not pick favorites. They treat everyone the same.

My favorite teacher was my fifth grade teacher. This is because she put so much energy into teaching the class. She even organized trips for us on things that we were learning in order to increase what we got out of the lesson. In a way she made learning fun. However, at the time I did not like her because I felt she gave us too much work, but now I see why she did and I know that all the work she made us do was worth it because it benefitted all of us in the future. My fifth grade teacher was patient and would never give up on a student. She would sit there with anyone who needed help until they completely understood what was going on. My teacher even stayed after class with many people to help them if they needed it. She was a very nice lady and I really learned a lot from her.

Interview 2

Interview with someone who has never been tanning from Long Island

Tina: Why have you never went tanning?

Jessica: I never went tanning because it is bad for you.

Tina: So you’re saying that the risks are too great for you to even consider it and it is not worth risking a disease just so that you get a tan?

Jessica: Yes

Tina: Do you think that people look better with a tan?

Jessica: No, because sometimes people that go tanning in a tanning salon turn out looking too orange and fake.

Tina: Do a lot of people around you go tanning?

Jessica: Yes, but that does not change the way I think of tanning.

Tina: Thank you.

Skiing...

This weekend I went to Vermont to go skiing for the weekend with a couple of my friends. I am from Staten Island and to get there was a very long drive. It took about 7 hours because we got lost going up the mountain. Plus one of our cars got stuck because of the snow so two of my friends had to push it out about ten times, but that ended up being kind of funny. The way home wasn't as bad. It only took about six hours and we didn't get lost, but it was still very long. I was just happy I didn't drive because I hate driving. I hate the pressure of driving and being in "control" of something. I have my license because my family and friends encouraged me that it is something that I should have just in case of anything. The first time I took my road test I failed it. However, I was actually kind of happy becuase this meant that I would not have to worry about driving ever again, but about four months later I decided to take my road test again and this time I actually passed. In the beginning I never drove. I had a car, but it basically just sat in my driveway or one of my parents drove it. Then as time went on I realized I couldn't depend on everyone forever. I had to get more used to driving whether I liked it or not. I knew my problem was that I was nervous once I sat down behind the driver seat because I felt like there was too much pressure on me. I am often very hesitant before I turn or something, but after time one of my friends helped me by getting me more used to driving. I still do not like driving. I would rather just sit there and have someone else drive, but I know it is something I have to do. I can't always rely on my friends to drive me to work or school and public transportation become annoying. So, now I drive a lot often than I used to even though it is something I would prefer not to do. However, I still do not drive over bridges or highways, but I am hoping to drive over one soon so I can get over that fear too.

Anyway... I went to Vermont for four days to go skiing. It was my first time skiing and since I am not very athletic and i do not like the snow that much I thought I would end up hating it, but it actually was not that bad. I actually ended up having a lot of fun even though I fell so many times. But my friends that knew how to ski actually helped me out a lot and towards the end I kind of got the hang of it, but I still don't know if it is something I would want to do a lot. After a while I kind of got bored of it and decided to stop skiing and just wait at the bottom of the mountain for my friends. I am just happy I actually tried something new and it was not as bad as I expected it to be.

In Vermont my friends and I rented a cabin. It was a lot of fun, but I had absolutely no cell phone service and no internet because the cabin was like in the middle of a mountain that was in the middle of nowhere. At first this really annoyed me because I don't remember the last time I had to go four days without being online or talking on my cell phone, but I began getting used to it. It was actually kind of relaxing and we all played games and stuff to keep ourselves occupied instead of worrying about what was going on on myspace or facebook. I'm not going to lie though, as soon as I got home I went straight to my computer and checked my myspace and facebook, but it was still good to get away from it for a little. As for the cell phone it was kind of nice to just do my own thing without worrying about anyone calling me or texting or without having me having to call people and talk to them about nothing. However, even though it was nice being without a cell phone and online I know I would not be able to stay without those things for a longer period of time because it is my way of keeping in contact with everyone.

Overall I had a really fun weekend. In the beginning I was hesitant about actually going on this ski trip, but now I am really happy I went.

Eye damage caused by tanning

For the eyes, many studies have shown that increased exposure to ultraviolet rays actually increases the possibility of developing certain types of cataracts. While cataracts can be removed surgically, they can present as a serious problem. However, overexposure can cause other eye problems such as pterygium, which is tissue growth on the white part of the eye, and macula degeneration, which is damage to the retina.
Therefore, above anything, always wear the protective eye gear. Remember that not all tanning salons enforce the wearing of goggles so ultimately, you have the responsibility to protect your eyes. If you notice the goggles not fitting correctly, ask for another pair until you find one that does. Many people who tan on a regular basis will buy their own goggles, ensuring their eyes have the best possible protection.
Finally, if at any time you see a tanning salon advertising that their beds do not produce glare so goggles are not needed, you should run away as fast as you can. This is a false claim that is highly irresponsible on the side of the tanning salon owners. This is serious business and you only have one set of eyes so do everything you can to protect them for life.

Benefits of tanning

While getting a tan is the first benefit most people think of, in reality, there are other benefits of tanning beds that you might not have considered. For example, in the past few years, new scientific research has been conducted whereby it has been identified that exposure to UV rays actually helps the body create a natural supply of Vitamin D.
Since many unfortunate diseases are linked directly to Vitamin D deficiencies to include both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, using a tanning bed to increase these vitamin levels is a huge benefit. In addition to strengthening bone, Vitamin D is also essential for the prevention of many forms of cancer to include prostate, colon, and breast.
Some people will tan indoors simply because of convenience. Take people who live in states where sunshine is a rare occurrence. In this situation, a tanning bed can be substituted for the lack of sunlight but keep in mind that because most beds emit from 50% to 100% the UV rays over that of the sun, the individual should be responsible about the amount of time spent in the bed as well as the frequency of use.
Interestingly, the number of men versus women who use indoor tanning beds is just about equal. Most people will tell you that when they have tan skin, they feel better, look healthier, and have a thinner, fit appearance. While there are risks associated with tanning beds, the fact remains that people feel better when they have a tan. For that reason, indoor tanning continues to be a popular solution.
In fact, more than 50% of people who enjoy indoor tanning say that they actually use this form of tanning as a means of controlling how much exposure to the sun they get. In other words, they can determine the amount of UV rays by choosing the schedule time in the "sun."
If you are interested in tanning indoors, just remember that along with several valid benefits there are also risk factors to consider. UV rays are UV rays whether they come from the sun or a tanning bed. Therefore, the amount received must be limited to avoid damaging the skin and eyes. With some good, old-fashioned common sense, tanning beds do provide a means for establishing and maintaining a beautiful, golden tan.

Effects of tanning

Through in-depth studies, today we know that the effects of tanning beds can be detrimental. Although we now have safer beds that put out less ultraviolet rays, the fact is that tanning still gives off 50% more ultraviolet radiation as what you would get from the sun. Many people believe that with new beds now using long-wave rays, or UVA instead of short-wave rays, UVB, there is no longer risk.

Keep in mind that although UVA rays do not burn the skin in the same way that UVB rays do, they actually permeate the skin even deeper, thus causing more significant and permanent damage. Now, consider that even the top of the line tanning beds still emit some degree of UVB rays and you can imagine the long-term devastation to the skin as well as the cornea of the eyes.
Unfortunately, exposure over a long period of time causes irreversible damage. Therefore, the next time you want to get a suntan, you should consider all the possible effects to determine if you are willing to put yourself at risk simply for a dark, golden tan.

Interview

Interview with a person from Staten Island that goes tanning.

Tina: Why do you go tanning even though you know it may lead to different diseases in the future?

Brian: I go tanning because I feel as if it improves my appearance and makes me feel better about myself.

Tina: What is wrong with regular tanning during the summer; just laying out in the sun.

Brian: There is nothing wrong with laying out in the sun during the summer it’s just with people’s busy schedules at times and their priorities it is more convenient to go to a tanning salon for a shorter period of time and whatever time they have free, whether it be at night or day.

Tina: Isn’t it expensive? It’s like your paying for something that you can just do naturally.

Brian: No, because like I said before sometimes doing it naturally isn’t convenient and spending money on tanning is something I like to do for myself.

Tina: How did you come up with this whole thing that being tanner means you look better?

Brian: It is because the way I look at it everyone looks better with a tan. It makes people stand out more and look more radiant.

Tina: Where are you from? And do a lot of people there go tanning?

Brian: I am from Staten Island and tanning is a very common thing for people around my age as well as for other people of different ages to go tanning. Even people you would least expect to go tanning do. For example, teachers and even senior citizens go tanning.

Tina: Do you think that since tanning is so common in Staten Island it affected the way you think that tan people look better?

Brian: Yes, because that is the type of environment I grew up in. After seeing everyone tan you begin to get used to that as the ideal person.

Tina: But is the physical outlook on tanning worth your life?

Brian: Well in a person’s mind they are more worried about the today rather then the tomorrow, at that moment in time is what matters most and whatever effects or consequences caused by it aren’t thought about or consumed within their mind.

Tina: Thank you for your time. Have a good day.

Brian: Thank you. It was my pleasure.

Snow

It's snowing right now and normally I would be upset because I do not like snow or the cold. Even though snow is pretty at times, I hate walking in it I also hate when it turns into slush and gets all dirty becuase then it looks gross and just makes a mess everywhere. For example, it causes your pants and shoes to get all wet, but when I am inside watching the snow fall and do not need to go outside I don't really mind it too much.

However, today I am happy it snowed because all classes after three were cancelled. My first class was at 4:40 and it was a three hour class. Therefore, I did not have any classes today and the class that was cancelled is the hardest class I have. This is kind of bad though because I am having the midterm in two weeks and this would have been our last class before the midterm.

If classes are cancelled tomorrow I will like the snow even more. This is because tomorrow is my longest day of classes. I have four classes and one of them is a three hour class. Plus tomorrow night I am leaving to go away for the weekend, so if classes are cancelled I'll have more time to pack.

Even though I hate the snow because it gets really annoying and messy, I guess there is some good that can come from it.

My weekend...

This weekend was fun because I went to visit my friend at New Paltz which is where she goes to school. She really likes it there. Overall both of our schools are similar, but they have their differences school. St. John's is definately a lot more strict than New Paltz. For example, they don't need to sign people in that go in and out of there dorm rooms. Also they do not need to sign in over night guests through the computer, and they do not have a limited number of people that are allowed to stay in the dorm room. These rules that St. John's has are both good and bad. They are good because they make me feel safe. However, I do not like the fact that I feel like I am still being treated as a child. I feel like the rules here are stricter than when I was home. Some rules are understandable, but I feel the curfew rules are very irresonable. There is no reason for people that do not go to St. John's to be out of the dorm rooms by midnight. Even at home I do not have to be home at that time.

One thing that was the same at the two schools were the dining area. They had a cafeteria just like Montgoris where students could get food. The food was not even that different. However, I do think it tasted a little better than the food we have here, but that is probally becuase I wasn't used to having it everyday. Just like St. John's New Paltz also has a little deli with food like we have Hungry Johnny's except theirs is called Oscar's. They also have a couple different places to get food that use "points" or as they call them "units."

The main difference between the two schools is location. New Paltz is more in a country area and St. John's is in the city. Around New Paltz was quiet. There was not much going on during the day and you can even see the stars in the sky at night. Also it was a lot colder. There were no busses or trains and the closest thing to the school was about a fifteen to twenty minute walk. St. John's is completely differnt. If you walk outside during the day no matter what you will definately find noise. Also there are many things about a five minute walk away from the school; including bus stops. In Queens it gets cold during the winter, but definately not as cold as it gets at New Paltz.

St. John's is more my type of school. I like how close it is too the city, and the way you can get almost anywhere by taking buses or other forms of public transportation. I grew up in the city, so I know if I went to a school upstate I would not be happy because I would feel like everything was so dull and empty since I am used to the rushing and loudness of all the different people in the city.

Why are you here, at this university, at this time?

I am here at this university because I want to get a college education. I also want to be able to have the oppurtunity to get a good, high paying job. When I get older I woul like to become a speech pathologist and hopefully getting an eduction at this university will help me pursue my dream.

I honestly choose St. John's because out of all the schools that I applied to they offered me the most money. Also because it was far enough away from home that I would be able to gain my independence, but at the same time I can go home whenever I would like to. I live in Staten Island. Therefore, it is very easy to take public transportation to my house, and it is even easier to get picked up because it is only a forty-five minute drive. The last reason I am here at this university is because St. John's is one of the top schools for my major.

I think I made the right decision in coming to this university. Hopefully, this school helps me achieve my goals of becoming a speech pathologist. Also, by coming to this school I hope I become more independent since I am living on my own. Even though I only completed one semester this school has helped me grow and become more mature. I hope it continues to do this. Therefore, I am happy I am here at this university at this time.
